Biography of Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born in Porbandar, India, trained as a lawyer in London yet found his true calling in South Africa fighting racial discrimination. Returning home, he led India’s independence movement through satyagraha—truth and nonviolent resistance. The Salt March, Quit India movement, and his fasts for Hindu-Muslim unity showed the world that empires could be brought low by moral force. Called “Mahatma” (great soul) and “Bapu” (father), he inspired civil rights leaders everywhere with the simple power of love over hate. Though he passed on January 30, 1948, Gandhi’s light of ahimsa continues guiding humanity toward peace and freedom.
