Biography of Auschwitz Victims
Between 1940 and its liberation on January 27, 1945, more than one million Jewish people, along with Roma, Poles, Soviet prisoners, and others, passed through the gates of Auschwitz-Birkenau bearing the cruel words “Arbeit macht frei.” Mothers clutching children, scholars carrying wisdom, ordinary families holding hope—all were quietly taken in humanity’s darkest chapter. Yet even there, small acts of kindness, hidden poems, and whispered prayers kept light alive. Today the preserved site stands as a solemn memorial and museum, visited by millions who promise “Never again.” Candles lit each year on Yom HaShoah and International Holocaust Remembrance Day honor their memory, reminding the world that love and remembrance are stronger than hate.
