Biography of Anne Frank
Annelies Marie Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany, into a loving Jewish family that fled to Amsterdam seeking safety. A bright, witty girl with dreams of becoming a writer, Anne received a red-and-white checkered diary for her 13th birthday. Weeks later, her family went into hiding in the Secret Annex. For over two years she poured her hopes, fears, and keen observations into its pages, writing, “I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” Betrayed and arrested in August 1944, Anne passed in Bergen-Belsen in early 1945. Her diary, recovered by her father Otto—the sole survivor—was published in 1947. Now translated into more than 70 languages, it remains one of the most powerful testaments to human spirit and a lasting call to kindness amid darkness.
